UAE: Emirates introduces pre-travel rehearsal for passengers with special needs

asmaa - | Arab News

Families with autistic or sensory disorder members are currently the focus of initiatives to make airport travel more accessible, with a focus on Dubai International Airport.

Emirates is spearheading this initiative, aiming to assist "people of determination" and their families with a pre-travel rehearsal program. This program includes guided tours of airport facilities and aircraft cabins, providing valuable insights into the travel experience for neurodiverse customers.

In a recent event at Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport, Emirates collaborated with various neurodiverse centers in Dubai, inviting families with neurodiverse children to participate in a check-in process and a trial flight. Notably, the airline extended its invitation to a child with Angelman Syndrome, a condition characterized by developmental delays and other challenges.

The group made use of the airport's Autism Friendly Route, which takes advantage of designated lanes for people with autism at many checkpoints, including security, boarding, check-in, and passport control. Assistance was provided by professionally qualified Emirates workers throughout the voyage, guaranteeing a seamless travel experience.

One of the driving forces behind this initiative is the low rate of travel among families with neurodiverse children due to the stress and sensory challenges associated with airports and flights. Research by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) revealed that only a small percentage of such families opt for vacations. However, the majority expressed a willingness to travel more if additional support and autism-certified options were available.

Emirates is not only focusing on pre-travel preparation but also providing comprehensive training on neurodiversity to its team members. Moreover, the airline plans to introduce further initiatives to support neurodiverse individuals, aligning with Dubai's commitment to inclusivity for people of determination.

Existing facilities at Dubai International Airport, such as complimentary parking and accessible taxis, aim to enhance the overall travel experience for people with disabilities.

Passengers can also benefit from the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard, a globally recognized symbol indicating hidden disabilities. Specialized training equips staff wearing sunflower pins to assist travelers with hidden disabilities.

In-flight enhancements include noise-canceling headphones for passengers with auditory sensitivities in premium classes, further catering to the diverse needs of travelers. Overall, these initiatives aim to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for neurodiverse individuals and their families when traveling through Dubai International Airport and flying with Emirates.
