Over 19,600 Arrested in Saudi Arabia Residency and Labor Crackdown Last Week

asmaa - | Arab News

Saudi Arabia's recent enforcement efforts have led to the arrest of more than 19,600 individuals within the past week. These arrests are part of a broader initiative to curb residency, labor, and security violations across the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia's Vigorous Response to Residency, Labor, and Security Violations

In a bid to maintain law and order and ensure strict adherence to residency, labor, and security regulations, Saudi Arabia has intensified its enforcement efforts, resulting in the arrest of over 19,600 individuals in the past week alone.

Cracking Down on Violations

From April 25 to May 1, 2024, nationwide inspection campaigns were carried out with the aim of scrutinizing compliance with residency, work, and border security laws. The results of these operations revealed a staggering 19,662 violations, including residency infractions (12,436 cases), border security breaches (4,464 incidents), and labor laws violations (2,762 instances).

Demographic Trends

The data analysis reveals notable demographic trends among violators. Notably, 31% of those attempting to cross the border illegally were Yemenis, with Ethiopians constituting the majority at 65%. Additionally, 4% comprised individuals of other nationalities. Furthermore, 96 individuals were apprehended for unlawfully attempting to exit the kingdom.

Enforcement measures and legal proceedings

In response to the detected violations, authorities swiftly took action, resulting in the arrest of nine individuals involved in facilitating residency, work, and border security law violations. Presently, a total of 53,084 violative expatriates, including 48,583 males and 4,501 females, are undergoing legal procedures. As part of repatriation efforts, 44,524 individuals have been directed to their respective diplomatic missions to secure travel documents, while 2,952 have been instructed to finalize their travel reservations. Additionally, 15,200 individuals have already been repatriated.

Legal Ramifications

To deter future infractions, the Ministry of Interior has issued stern warnings regarding illegal immigration activities. Those found guilty of facilitating the illegal entry, transport, or sheltering of individuals in Saudi Arabia face severe penalties, including imprisonment for up to 15 years and fines of up to SAR1 million. Furthermore, vehicles and properties implicated in such crimes are subject to confiscation.

A Call for Public Vigilance

Recognizing the critical role of public cooperation in combating violations, the Ministry urges individuals to report any suspicious activities promptly. For reporting purposes, emergency hotlines are available, including 911 in the Makkah, Riyadh, and Eastern regions and 999 or 996 elsewhere in the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia's unwavering commitment to upholding residency, labor, and border security regulations is evident through its proactive enforcement measures and public engagement initiatives. By cracking down on violations and fostering public vigilance, the kingdom endeavors to maintain law and order while safeguarding its borders and citizens from potential threats.
