UAE imposes Dh800 fine on distracted drivers causing shocking collisions

asmaa - | Arab News

Tragic accidents involving loss of life are possible in the fraction of a second that drivers spend looking at their phones. On Friday, the Abu Dhabi Police Department shared a video illustrating the dangers of distracted driving and reaffirmed its earlier warnings.

The Abu Dhabi Police recently shared a video highlighting the grave consequences of distracted driving, emphasizing the dangers posed by activities such as using mobile phones, eating, drinking, or applying makeup while behind the wheel. Through a 44-second compilation of shocking vehicle collisions, the police underscored the critical need for drivers to remain fully attentive on the roads.

The video depicted various scenarios where unexpected traffic situations led to devastating crashes. One alarming example showcased a speeding driver failing to recognize traffic congestion in the lane he had shifted to, resulting in a collision with an SUV, causing it to overturn. Similarly, another scene depicted a silver sedan colliding with a van, subsequently causing the van to collide with a road barrier.

The Abu Dhabi Police emphasized the importance of driving attentively to anticipate and react to sudden changes in traffic conditions, urging drivers to remain vigilant to avoid collisions. They highlighted the significant consequences of distracted driving, including the potential loss of lives and property damage.

In the United Arab Emirates, distracted driving constitutes a serious traffic offense, punishable by an 800-dirham fine and four black points on the driver's license. By sharing this video, the police aim to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and encourage responsible behavior behind the wheel.

Ultimately, the message conveyed by the Abu Dhabi Police serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of staying focused while driving, as even a momentary lapse in attention can have devastating consequences on the road.
