UAE Police caution motorists to avoid texting while driving for safety reasons

asmaa - | Arab News

Officials are advising drivers on Sunday, June 16, not to send and receive Eid greetings while behind the wheel.

Authorities emphasize road safety during Eid celebrations

On Sunday, June 16, authorities emphasized the importance of not sending Eid congratulatory messages while driving. The Abu Dhabi police used social media to remind drivers to strictly adhere to traffic rules and to avoid distractions caused by mobile phones, highlighting the dangers such distractions pose to both their lives and the lives of others.

Penalties for Distracted Driving

The penalties for distracted and reckless driving are quite severe: violators face a fine of Dh800 along with the addition of 4 traffic points to their record. This serves as a stern warning to discourage such hazardous behavior on the roads.

In a related advisory, the Dubai Police also issued a warning earlier that same day as the Eid al-Adha celebrations commenced. They specifically cautioned drivers against parking in the middle of the road, a practice that can cause significant traffic disruptions and increase the risk of accidents.

Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai authorities leveraged social media to communicate these critical safety messages, urging motorists to stay alert and considerate. The underlying message was clear: maintaining focus and adhering to traffic regulations is essential, especially during festive periods when the roads are busier and the risk of accidents may be higher.

The warnings and penalties underscore the broader commitment of UAE police to ensure road safety. By enforcing these rules and penalties, the authorities aim to reduce incidents of distracted driving and promote a culture of safe driving practices. The emphasis on not using mobile phones while driving and not obstructing traffic aligns with global road safety campaigns, reflecting the UAE's dedication to protecting its citizens and residents.

As Eid celebrations bring joy and gatherings, the police's reminders serve as a crucial check against complacency on the roads. It is a call to action for all motorists to prioritize safety, respect traffic laws, and consider the well-being of everyone on the road. By doing so, the community can enjoy the festivities without the shadow of preventable accidents.

The use of social media by the police demonstrates an effective strategy in modern law enforcement, reaching a wide audience quickly and efficiently. This approach ensures that the safety messages are disseminated broadly, increasing the likelihood of compliance among drivers.

The authorities' announcements on June 16 are a reminder of the serious consequences of distracted and reckless driving. With fines and traffic points as deterrents and a consistent push for awareness, the UAE police are steadfast in their efforts to enhance road safety. Motorists are encouraged to heed these warnings, not only to avoid penalties but, more importantly, to safeguard their lives and the lives of others during the festive period and beyond.
