Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is embarking on Phase II of its Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Improvement and Expansion Project, aiming to significantly enhance the city's transportation infrastructure.

This phase represents a pivotal step towards expanding the coverage of Dubai's main road network from the existing 60% to a comprehensive 100% by the year 2026. The project will extend the ITS coverage from 480 km to 710 km of roads, ensuring a seamless integration of advanced technologies across the entire urban landscape.
Foundational Enhancements in Phase I
The initial phase of the project laid a strong foundation with the installation of 116 traffic surveillance cameras, increasing the total to 311 cameras, and deploying 100 incident monitoring and vehicle counting devices, now totaling 227. Furthermore, the project introduced 112 variable message signs (VMS) and 115 travel time and speed measurement devices. To support these advancements, 17 weather sensor stations were established, along with the construction of 660 km of electric power lines and an 820 km fiber optic network, underscoring Dubai's commitment to cutting-edge infrastructure.
Central to the project is the Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Center located in Al Barsha, renowned as one of the world's largest and most sophisticated traffic control centers. Equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities, this center serves as a nerve center for managing Dubai's expansive road network. The center's integrated platform, known as "iTraffic," harnesses AI and advanced communication systems to optimize traffic flow and facilitate informed decision-making.
The expansion initiative also includes the adoption of cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) and benchmarks against global leaders in urban transport management, such as Singapore and Seoul. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, highlighted significant improvements achieved through the project, including a 63% enhancement in incident monitoring, a 20% reduction in response times facilitated by the VMS, and improved coordination with the Enterprise Command and Control Centre and Dubai Police General HQ.
The comprehensive ITS infrastructure not only aims to enhance traffic management but also supports personal mobility initiatives, including advancements in self-driving transport solutions. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies, RTA seeks to create a safer, more efficient transport environment while ensuring real-time information dissemination through new VMS and smart applications. This strategic approach aligns with Dubai's vision to become a global leader in smart city initiatives, transforming urban mobility through innovation and sustainable development.
However, the ongoing ITS Improvement and Expansion Project underscores RTA's commitment to advancing Dubai's transportation infrastructure through the integration of intelligent technologies. By expanding ITS coverage and enhancing operational capabilities, the project aims to meet the growing demands of a dynamic city while setting new benchmarks in urban transport efficiency and sustainability.
