Dubai Municipality Addresses Dead Fish Sightings in Some Water Channels

asmaa - | Arab News

The Dubai Municipality (DM) has provided clarification regarding the presence of dead fish in water channels following recent heavy rainfall and floods in the emirate.

Various media outlets and social media platforms have reported sightings of dead fish on sidewalks and in water channels throughout Dubai.

DM emphasized that this occurrence is a natural phenomenon, attributing it to factors such as changes in weather conditions, including increased rainfall and rising sea surface temperatures. According to a spokesperson, the municipality's specialized teams are actively managing the situation by conducting cleanup and removal operations in accordance with established protocols to ensure environmental safety and public health.

The unprecedented rainfall on April 16 resulted in record-breaking precipitation for the UAE, with Dubai experiencing over 220mm within a 24-hour period, surpassing the typical annual rainfall for the region. Dawoud Al Hajri, the director general of DM, highlighted the extensive efforts undertaken by his teams to drain and manage the floodwaters, with continuous operations aimed at clearing streets and ensuring the effective functioning of sewage and rainwater drainage networks.

To facilitate the cleanup process and restore normalcy, DM mobilized a significant workforce comprising over 2,425 engineers, technicians, and workers. These teams operated around the clock, addressing various emergency situations arising from the impact of heavy rains, such as water accumulation, blocked drains, and fallen trees.

Additionally, other government entities, including the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), played a crucial role in the restoration efforts. The RTA deployed more than 2,500 personnel, along with a multitude of equipment, including pumps, tanks, trucks, and bulldozers, to facilitate the swift restoration of services and ensure smooth traffic flow on the roads.

The Dubai Municipality has reassured the public that the presence of dead fish in water channels is a natural occurrence, exacerbated by recent weather conditions. Through concerted efforts and effective coordination among various government agencies, comprehensive cleanup and restoration operations are underway to mitigate the impact of the floods and ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
