UAE Transit Visa: Applying for 48-hour or 96-hour Permit During Stopover

asmaa - | Arab News

Traveling abroad demands meticulous preparation, encompassing everything from scheduling the trip to securing the necessary funds and completing visa applications. If you're embarking on a lengthy journey and fancy a stopover in the UAE, a transit visa is your ticket to exploration.

Requirements and Application Process

A transit visa offers a unique opportunity to break the monotony of airport layovers and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the host country. Instead of idling away your time amidst the hustle and bustle of the terminal, this visa allows you to venture out and experience the country in bite-sized doses. Who knows, this brief encounter might ignite a desire to return for a longer stay, fostering a deeper connection with the destination.

To qualify for a transit visa, you'll need the following:

  • A passport with a validity of at least three months.
  • A photo with a white background.
  • A confirmed booking for a third destination, distinct from your origin,.

Given the prevalence of travel scams, it's crucial to note that only the UAE-based airline you're flying with can arrange your transit visa beforehand. Inform your airline or travel agency if you intend to secure a transit visa, as they will handle the application process. While they'll handle the logistics, it's prudent to follow up with them to ensure everything is in order.

Ticket Purchase and Visa Duration

As only UAE-based airlines can apply for transit visas, it's imperative to purchase your tickets exclusively from carriers based in the country. Opt for airlines such as Emirates Airline or Fly Dubai for a visit to Dubai, or choose Etihad Airways or Air Arabia for a trip to Abu Dhabi.

Transit visas are available for either 48 hours or 96 hours. If you are issued a 48-hour visa, you cannot extend it to 96 hours. The 48-hour visa is complimentary, valid from entry into the UAE, and must be utilized within 48 hours. Conversely, the 96-hour visa requires a payment of Dh50, is valid for 96 hours, and cannot be extended or renewed.

Additional Fees and Exemptions

Upon departure, you'll only incur a departure fee of Dh300, with no extra charges. Any requests for additional payments should be rejected, as they're unauthorized. Report any such requests to the airport authorities.

Obtaining a transit visa for a stopover in the UAE offers travelers the opportunity to make the most of their layover by exploring the country's vibrant culture, cuisine, and attractions. By adhering to the visa requirements and guidelines outlined by UAE-based airlines, travelers can ensure a hassle-free experience and maximize their time in the country. Whether it's a short 48-hour visit or an extended 96-hour stay, a transit visa opens up a world of possibilities for travelers passing through the UAE, transforming a mundane layover into an unforgettable adventure.

Not everyone requires a transit visa to enter the UAE. Passport holders from select countries can enjoy a 30-day stay in the country without a visa, while citizens of specific countries are eligible for alternative visa options, such as a multiple-entry 90-day visit visa or a pre-arranged visit visa. These exemptions cater to the diverse needs of travelers and facilitate seamless entry into the UAE.
