Saudi Arabia: Over 14,670 individuals arrested in a recent residency crackdown

asmaa - | Arab News

Saudi Arabia conducted extensive inspection campaigns across all regions of the country from April 11 to 17, 2024, targeting violations related to residency, labor, and border security regulations.

The crackdown resulted in the arrest of over 14,670 individuals for a variety of infractions.

Among the violations recorded, 9,479 were related to residency issues, 3,763 involved breaches of border security, and 1,430 pertained to labor law infringements. Notably, 996 individuals were apprehended while attempting to illegally cross into the Kingdom, with the majority being Yemenis (33%) and Ethiopians (64%), alongside a small percentage from other nationalities.

Additionally, 73 individuals were detained for trying to leave Saudi Arabia unlawfully, while six others were arrested for their involvement in facilitating the sheltering, transportation, and employment of individuals violating residency, work, and border security laws.

Currently, there are 58,902 expatriates undergoing legal procedures for contravening regulations, with 54,551 men and 4,351 women among them. Of those found in breach, 52,073 have been referred to their respective diplomatic missions to obtain necessary travel documents, while 2,861 others have been directed to complete their travel arrangements, and 8,766 have been deported.

The Ministry of Interior issued a stern warning against any involvement in facilitating illegal entry, transport, or sheltering of individuals within the Kingdom. Such actions carry severe penalties, including imprisonment for up to 15 years and fines reaching SR1 million ($267,000), with the possibility of confiscating vehicles or properties used for these purposes.

Emphasizing the seriousness of these offenses, the ministry encourages citizens to report any violations by utilizing designated emergency hotlines, such as 911 in Makkah, Riyadh, and the Eastern regions, and 999 and 996 elsewhere in the Kingdom. This proactive approach underscores the government's commitment to upholding law and order while safeguarding national security.
