From UAE to Oman by Car: Routes, Documents, and Essential Information Guide

asmaa - | Arab News

For many UAE residents, Oman has become a favored destination for short trips, whether to escape the city's hustle and bustle during long weekends or for a quick visa change.

Traveling from the UAE to Oman by car?

Its proximity to the UAE, straightforward visa process, and stunning landscapes make it an attractive option for road trips. Over the years, travel routes and entry costs have evolved, but the allure of Oman's scenic beauty remains. This guide provides an overview of the routes and documents required for traveling to Oman by car from the UAE.

Hatta, Al Wajajah Border

For travelers from Dubai, the Hatta-Al Wajajah border crossing is the most popular choice due to its direct and safe route, which typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic. Located about 140 kilometers from Dubai, motorists can take the E102 route to reach the border. This route is also convenient for residents from Sharjah, Dubai (especially areas closer to Sharjah), and other northern emirates, accessible via Mleiha Road.

From Mleiha Road, there are two main routes to Oman:

  1. The E84 exit, which heads towards Hatta, Fujairah, and Khorfakkan, This is the faster option.
  2. The Wadi Al Helo, Kalba Road, offers a scenic drive through mountains and wadis for those who aren't in a rush.

Meyzad, Hafeet Border

For residents of Abu Dhabi, the Meyzad-Hafeet border is a preferred route, situated 180 kilometers from the capital city. Dubai residents can also use this border, which is 160 kilometers away. This route is ideal for those heading to the southern parts of Oman and is close to Al Ain.

Dibba Border

If your destination is the vibrant corals and clear waters of Musandam, the Dibba border is the most suitable route. For Dubai residents, this journey takes around two hours and covers 146 kilometers. This border allows entry for expats without an Oman visa to visit visa holders, but they can only remain in the Dibba Musandam area. For those wanting to explore Khasab town in Musandam, the Al Darrah border crossing from Ras Al Khaimah is the best option. This route is only 35 kilometers from the mountainous emirate, though an Oman visa is required.

Documents Required

Residents traveling from the UAE to Oman by car need to carry the following documents:

  1. Original passport
  2. Original visa or a copy of the e-visa
  3. Emirates ID
  4. Car registration card (mulkiya)
  5. Orange Card, which is a car insurance certificate valid in Oman

When taking the Hatta route from Dubai, a 'Leaving Hatta' sign appears 500 meters before the Oman border, indicating the first checkpoint. At this UAE checkpoint, security personnel usually ask for the car's registration card and passports of all passengers. Here, travelers must pay an exit fee of Dh35.

After this, travelers reach the Oman border, where they go through passport control, often requiring them to leave their cars and enter the building for an entry stamp. Officials typically check the Emirates ID during this process. Upon leaving this post, some vehicles may be subject to inspection by officials at the final checkpoint in Oman.
